COMMISSIONERS RECOGNIZE KUNZLERS FOR FLOOD RESEARCH

SKAGIT COUNTY – The Skagit County Board of Commissioners recognized Larry and Josef Kunzler for their research and community activism on Skagit River flood history on Monday, June 13, 2005. Larry Kunzler received a plaque for “Outstanding Public Service.” Josef Kunzler were awarded a plaque for “Outstanding Performance.”

Recently Skagit County received a “Project of the Year” award for “Project of Historical Significance” from the Washington Branch of the American Public Works Association, for a historical newspaper archive on Skagit River floods. The Kunzlers worked with Skagit County Communications Director Dan Berentson on the project.

The Commissioners recognized Larry Kunzler for more than 30 years of research and community activism on issues pertaining to Skagit River Floods. “We recognize your diligence, tenacity, intelligence and generosity in sharing your valuable work,” said Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt.

Josef Kunzler was recognized for his work as a Skagit County Public Works intern processing, organizing, and posting vital information for public use.

The research project involved scanning hundreds of articles on Skagit River flooding from the archives of the Argus, Courier Times, Burlington Journal and Skagit Valley Herald ranging from the 1890s to the 1970s. “This significant community archive is now available online and in local libraries, thanks to the volunteerism and diligence of the Kunzler family,” said Berentson.

The Historical Newspaper Articles on Skagit River Floods archive is available online at www.skagitcounty.net under “Flood Information” and on the Kunzler’s personal site at www.skagitriverhistory.com
